In 1990, with the HITS Tour, KISS once again proved that they were a band to be reckoned with, even as the new decade began.
The tour showed that this line-up still had a future and could confidently look ahead to its 20th anniversary, despite the rapidly changing musical climate.
Full of confidence and renewed energy, the band turned its attention to writing and recording a new album that would receive the highly appropriate title: REVENGE.
The release of the album was delayed, however, when our beloved drummer Eric Carr was diagnosed with cancer. After successful treatment, it initially seemed that the disease had been defeated. Sadly, the opposite soon became clear. Eric Carr was seriously ill, and KISS decided to temporarily replace him with Eric Singer, who had already been playing drums in Paul Stanley's solo band.
In 1989, in New York, Eric Carr had prophetically said to Eric Singer: “You are going to replace me as the drummer of KISS.”
At the end of 1991, that prediction became reality although for a tragic reason Eric Carr could never have imagined. Eric Carr sadly passed away as a result of the terrible disease of cancer.
Despite this devastating setback, KISS came roaring back with the album REVENGE and the accompanying world tour. The tour was preceded by a series of club shows designed to introduce Eric Singer as the new drummer of KISS.
Hiring Eric Singer proved to be an absolutely perfect decision. He fit the band perfectly and, just as Eric Carr had done twelve years earlier, gave KISS the powerful kick it desperately needed.
KISS sounded fresh, hard, heavy and mean again just as they had between 1973 and 1975.
You can hear exactly how they sounded on this unique CD, which contains the only professional recordings of this club tour. These recordings were originally compiled for a single LP, which explains why the set is incomplete. But what you get here is KISS at their absolute best.
The band fires on all cylinders, combining classic songs with material from the new album. From the menace of “Unholy” and the swagger of “Take It Off” to the melancholic “God Gave Rock and Roll to You II”, the set delivers one highlight after another.
Do not let the relatively short playing time of approximately 50 minutes put you off. This perfectly mixed and mastered recording sounds like an official live release, complete with no overdubs.
This is truly one of the finest KISS live recordings ever made.
