KISS ? EARLIEST KNOWN CRAZY NIGHTS TOUR PERFORMANCE, NOVEMBER 14 1987
With a UK Top 10 hit under their belt and respectable album sales, KISS hit the road in November 1987 full of confidence, kicking off their tour in the Deep South of the United States.
KISS had always been a big draw in this part of the country. However, by the second half of the 1980s, concertgoers had plenty of bands to choose from. All the major acts were constantly touring the States to promote their latest albums, records that were selling millions more copies than KISS's latest masterpiece.
As a result, promoters were becoming cautious, and the tour was postponed several times in the hope that Crazy Nights would gain momentum in the sales charts. Eventually, the tour got underway relatively late in November, with several of the first shows having to be cancelled or rescheduled.
Until now, little to no recordings of these early shows have surfaced. This recording proves that the concerns were completely unfounded!
KISS delivers a fantastic performance, playing almost the entire Crazy Nights album live. The band has so much confidence in its new material that it dares to limit the setlist to just a handful of classics, with Love Gun opening the show and Detroit Rock City bringing it to a close.
This recording is truly unique, as it provides the only known evidence that album tracks such as Hell or High Water and When Your Walls Come Down were performed during this world tour.
Despite the tour's rocky start, the band's mission is clear from the outset: to win back the hearts of longtime fans and win over a new generation of KISS fans. And they succeed!
Over the following year, the tour will take the band to every corner of the world, playing to packed stadiums filled with up to 100,000 ecstatic fans. It will become the longest tour in the band's history up to that point, a record that would stand until the reunion tour.
It is fascinating to hear how this legendary tour originally began as an album showcase and gradually evolved into a greatest-hits set by the end of 1988.
Thanks to this incredible master recording, we can finally experience how it all began. And for that, we have every reason to be grateful!
